About this series:

The CONCRETE ART series is comprised of photographs I took at abandoned California forts, decaying coastal pumping stations, and other similar places, where I found an unexpected wealth of beautiful shapes, colors and textures. The name of the series is a play of words on the two meanings of “concrete”: the material of the portrayed objects and an early 20th century art movement close to Constructivism, to which I was introduced as a young architect at the Moscow Architectural Institute, formerly VKHUTEMAS, where in the 1970s there still could be heard an echo of Russian architectural avant-garde ideas that had been roiling in the 1920-30s. Since then I cannot help but find the extension of these ideas in the least expected places — in a pile of trash, a fragment of a decaying wall, a rusty fence, or broken stairs.
